Room 315, Tuesday Afternoon

Peridot was a Gem on a mission.

Not even the mission where she had to rub the rock-licking thing in Jason's face because it was a totally normal thing for geologists to do. That mission, she was going to save for later.

No, no, her mission today was to smuggle something into Jaylah's room. Something big. Something beautiful. Something distinctly fishy and prone to singing happy songs about being put back into the water or not worrying or whatever. Not that she was being terribly secretive about it, what with the way it was tucked unceremoniously under one armpit, her tool kit sitting on the floor beside her as she thumped on Jaylah's door with one little green fist.

"Jaylah! Hey, Jaylah! Open up!"

Yeah, this wasn't going to end in disaster at all.

When Jaylah opened the door, she had A staff on hand in case there was a fight. And then looked slightly disappointed when it was just Peridot and no sign of a fight, despite a careful glance up and down the hallway to check.

"You are very loud." You know, just stating a fact.

"I've had thousands of years to perfect my attention-getting yell," Peridot said, looking up at Jaylah with no small amount of pride before holding up the spoils of last week's street theater shenanigans. "Ready to make this into a fish worth having?"

"I have music to put in it," she said proudly, stepping aside to let Peridot into tbhe rokm.

"And I've managed to pull together enough materials to put together antigravity tech and a homing device!"

It was absolutely going to be her guinea pig for what, she hoped, would be a new set of limb enhancers, tailor-made to come back to her if misplaced or, say, thrown in the ocean, Amethyst.

"What music did you pick?"

Jaylah nodded in approval of all those things. Maybe she should have rigged together a securoty device for it...

"It is both classical and not, I have been told."

"Oooo, fancy," Peridot decided with a grin. "A definite improvement."

... She really needed to hear this.

"I did not enjoy the noises it makes now. If we added a louder sound, it might be listened to without pain."

She was wrong, but don't break her heart with this fact.

Peridot didn't generally associate 'painless' and 'louder' with one another, but she could appreciate that Jaylah wanted to make the attempt.

"The other noises are... vapid," she settled on. "Anything would be an improvement on that."

Well clearly she never saved people with the power of music before.

Jaylah nodded seriously, digging out the music player that she brought with her so they could transfer the music onto the fish.

And Peridot, in turn, opened up her toolkit and started pulling out random electronic components.

"I think if we pull out a few parts of the fish, we should be able to put our own modifications in there without sacrificing that... thing it does with its tail."

She kind of liked that part.

"Can we attach the anti-gravity device to the tail? So the locomotion is based around that."

Montgomery Scotty was gonna be so proud of her with this. So proud.

Peridot gasped a little, wide-eyed.

"Yes! Perfect! That's how they move in the first place!"

This fish was going to swim right back to Anakin tomorrow, screaming Beastie Boys the whole way, wasn't it?

YES IT WAS.

Jaylah preened a little at that, fiddling with the wiring to get her music to take over the horrible noise it normally produced. "We could leave the fish here tonight. So that Just Norman may enjoy his improved prize."

"I think that would be appropriate," Peridot decided, nodding thoughtfully. "I suppose he did earn it."

Norman was so going to have nightmares about screaming fish forever.

Pfft. It was just a little traumatizing.

"And then he may attempt to earn it again." Or have it stolen by someone else?

Norman was never going to get that fish.

Never.

"It will be so much better if he succeeds!"

"We have already made it better," Jaylah agreed as the fish began to shriek the lyrics of Sabotage.

As a test of its functions.

"We have," Peridot agreed proudly, nodding her approval to the shrieking fish. "Much."

And now she was making grabby hands. Oh, the grabby hands.

"My turn!"

Jaylah shoved the fish back over to her, hovering just over her shoulder to see what she was using to make her anti-grav technology.

Most of what Peridot was pulling out just looked like random metal tubes and polished stones, but she set to work immediately, carefully peeling back the rubber skin of the fish to expose the mechanics inside its tail. A few minutes of poking and prodding with various tools, some throwing away of various mechanical bits inside the fish in order to make room for better, smaller, more effective ones, and Peridot was putting the fish skin back in place, hitting a button.

"There," she said proudly as the fish flicked its tail around, propelling it up into the air before leveling out again a few feet off the ground. "Much better. And the stones I installed should provide a more stable energy source in order to sustain its flight capabilities for thousands of years."

Way more efficient than double-As.

"And now... to me, fish!" She held out her hand.

The fish hovered there.

"Fish... to me."

It remained. Peridot frowned.

"Maybe it just needs more time to recognize us as the people it belongs to," she muttered.

"To me, fish," Jaylah called out in a much more stern voice. But nothing happened for her either.

Which probably meant they'd need to steal it again to troubleshoot that mistake.

Peridot wrinkled her nose at it.

"I might have needed to use a different alloy in the wiring," she muttered. "I can remedy that at a future point, once I've found a more appropriate material. Earth technology still presents a bit of a learning curve."

"I will ask for supplies when I next speak with the Enterprise," she promised. And then would have to explain that she stole a singing fish and was trying to make it even more rad.

Peridot nodded her approval. Because anything had to be better than the supplies she was working with now.

"That does have some promise," she decided.

They were going to be so confused on that ship. So confused.

In her defense, she was sent here to socialize. This was socializing. After a fashion.

Jaylah nodded again firmly. "We will succeed in this."

And make Anakin cry.

But getting that fish back would be so much simpler every week!

"And it will be glorious!"

Or at least she'd be satisfied that her test run for homing devices in her personal stuff wasn't a complete failure.

And they could move onto other projects!

"We should leave it on Just Norman's bed." She honestly wasn't trying to traumatize him. It just happened.

It would be great! How many other wonderful things could they turn into nightmarish screeching automatons?

"Yes! Or just above Just Norman's bed!"

Poor Norman. Now there were two aliens calling him that.

He knew what he got himself into here!

"That should work as well," she agreed, thinking of the practical applications. It could be considered a test run!

"Excellent!" Peridot lifted her hand and kind of scoot-scooted the fish toward the bed that she assumed belonged to Just Norman. Mostly because the number of decorations on that side of the room seemed excessive to the point of human. "Anybody would be thrilled to come back to such a scientific achievement."

Jaylah nodded in full agreement. "They enjoy technology."

That was her hot take on humanity.
