The Barn, Peridot's Earth, Sunday Fandom Time
Time since Peridot's adventure in the Beta Kindergarten had passed by fairly uneventfully. She had Lapis had taken to bonding over episodes of Camp Pining Hearts, and when they weren't doing that (or making more meep morps), they were experimenting in farming. And tonight, Steven was coming over for a sleepover, which was the perfect time to show off their agricultural pursuits.
Steven arrived while Peridot was hard at work... mostly just driving around.
"Steven! I'm on a tractor!"
Peridot liked tractors. It was Paris' fault.
Steven looked her way, and the continued talking to Lapis.
Peridot tried again.
"Steven! How do you like our little-" The tractor came to an abrupt stop, and Peridot went jolting forward with an 'oof!' "- experiment?"
"It's amazing," Steven replied, looking around at the rows of produce that were growing around him. "What made you want to start farming all of a sudden?"
"I have all the skills required for growing Gems," Peridot explained as she jumped off the tractor and made her way toward the rows of corn. Of course she'd grown corn. That was Paris' fault, too. "I figured, why not try growing something else? Who knows? Maybe they're ready right now!" She pulled an ear of corn off the stalk and looked at it. "Hello, corn." The corn was, predictably, silent. "Maybe she can't hear me in there?" She stared at it, hard. It continued to do nothing. "I MADE YOU IN MY IMAGE, YOU WILL DO AS I SAY!"
Of course, Steven was laughing at her, now.
"Wait, you didn't think the corn was gonna walk right out of the ground when you told it to, did you? That's not how vegetables work."
"It's not? Well, then, what's the point of corn?" Aaaand that cob of corn was being thrown to the ground. "I have to admit, I've really been starting to miss the pitter-patter of full-sized Gem soldiers..."
A Kindergarten, this farm was not.
"It does get pretty quiet around here," Lapis agreed.
"Come on, Lapis," Peridot said, "let's go disassemble the tractor."
They went to do just that, leaving Steven behind with the garden.
-----
"Hurry, Steven!"
Steven wasn't moving near quickly enough for Peridot's tastes. She had something to show him now. They'd gone away to take the tractor apart, and when they'd come back to the garden the next day, something amazing had happened.
"Peridot, slow down!"
"But you need to see! We did it!" She came to a stop on the edge of the garden, where a small pumpkin was bouncing up and down and barking at them. "Guess you don't know how vegetables work after all."
"Heh," Steven said, "yeah, you guys sure showed me."
"Come now, my little creation!" Peridot broke the stem off and picked the pumpkin dog up in her hands. "You can assist in harvesting the rest of your kind."
The dog, disappointingly, jumped from her hand and ran over to Steven, who shifted his weight uneasily.
"Uh... Must be the pumpkin treats in my back pocket..."
"That doesn't make sense," Peridot protested, frowning as she made her way towards Steven. "We made it! It should listen to us!"
Lapis was frowning as well as she stepped up beside Peridot.
"It's only just come into existence, and it already doesn't like us."
"Oh, come on," Steven pleaded. "Go to Peridot and Lapis!" Steven gave the pumpkin dog a shove toward the two Gems. The pumpkin dog jumped right back into his arms. He sighed, defeated and a little sheepish. "I'm sorry, I think he's coming to me because... I'm the one who made him."
...
"Oh." Peridot deadpanned at Steven and the dog. "That explains it."
"Well," Lapis reached to pick up another pumpkin. "We made this one."
"It's... okay." Peridot squinted at it. "But it doesn't look like Steven's. It has a face and everything."
"It's true," Lapis agreed, sadly. "Ours doesn't have a face..."
"Oh no!" Steven waved his hands around, and then ran toward the pumpkin field. "Don't be sad! Wait right here, I have an idea." He picked a pumpkin and made himself comfortable in front of it. "My dad showed me how to do this once." He picked up a trowel as the dog trotted up to sit beside him to watch what he was doing. "First we make a mouth! Nyah!" Steven dragged the trowel across the inanimate pumpkin, carving a mouth shape in it as the pumpkin dog watched, confused. "Then we make two eyes." A stab and a stab, earning a whimper from the dog. "Hmm. Looking pretty good. Oh, you know what? I almost forgot a really important step. You have to hollow it out!"
And that would be when he carved the top off the pumpkin, and then up-ended it to pour the guts out onto the ground. Presto! A pumpkin with a face!
... When he looked up again, the pumpkin dog had run away from him in terror, leaping up into Lapis Lazuli's arms.
"Yay! It loves us now." Peridot reached to pat the pumpkin on the head as it barked angrily at Steven. "Aww, it's okay, Veggiehead. That brute can't get you now."
And that was how Peridot and Lapis got a pet... dog.
Sort of.
[OOC: Last of the canon, for now! Taken from Gem Harvest, or the first five minutes or so of it. I'm not writing out the awkward Thanksgiving dinner with the bigoted uncle, you'll have to watch the episode yourself for that.]
